Why Breastfeed?
Posted on: 04/09/2008 06:10 PM
Here are 101 Reasons....

101 Reasons to Breastfeed

Some of My favorites:

-Breastfeeding results in less sick days for parents!!!!
Since breastfed babies are statistically healthier than their formula fed peers, the parents of breastfed babies spend less time out of work taking care of sick children.

-Breast milk is free!!!!
Any way you look at it, you'll spend a lot more money if you choose to formula feed. The added calories a nursing mother must take in are a negligible expense, and nursing clothes are optional. If you need to pump, excellent pumps are available for between $50 and $225. A good pump can be used for more than one child, so they are really an investment. Do be sure to buy a pump manufactured by a company specializing in their manufacture. Beware of pumps made by formula companies. Many woman report these pumps to be inefficient at best, and painful at worst.

Formula Cost:

In FL:

Regular Milk or Soy-based formula (Powder): $13.00-16.00 for 12 oz/lasts 3-4 days

Specialized formulas (For infants that need Lactose-free/Sensitive/Protein or Soy Allergy/Colic/Reflux/GERD, Etc): $15.00-30.00 or more....(Lasts 3-4 days)

Formula for pre-mature babies: About $15.00-20.00/can of powder

Most babies use 12 or more cans of powder formula a month, so multiply an averafe 15.00/can x 12 (or more) = $180 x 12 (months) = $2160.00/year.....

I don't know about you but I am sure I can find SOMETHING ELSE I can do with $2160.00 or more!

Concentrate formula: $6-8/13 oz. can x 31 cans/month = $186 (@6.00/can) x 12 months = $2232.00

Ready-to-feed: $26-50.00/can 32 oz. x 20 cans/month = $520 (@26.00/can) x 12 months = $6240.00

-Breast milk tastes better than formula
Human breast milk is sweet and light. Formula is pasty and bland. Which would you rather eat?

-No bottles to tote
Unless you're pumping and transporting the milk for later. Even then there are fewer bottles to deal with.

-Breastmilk has never been recalled due to manufacturing problems
Formula has been, sometimes after causing injury or death. There were 22 "significant" recalls of formula including 7 potentially life threatening situations.

-MY FAVORITE:

What would you do to feed your baby in a disaster (Think Katrina, Rita, Tsunami)????

You cannot trust the sterility of the water sources (if there is one)...Breastfeeding provides a ready available source for the baby. Even if YOU don't eat, you will still produce milk as long as you breastfeed your baby!

That was awesome! I didn't realize how much formula cost!

-MY FAVORITE TOO:

What would you do to feed your baby in a disaster (Think Katrina, Rita, Tsunami)???? We get hurricanes almost every year, so this touches me personally!

I planned on breastfeeding, for all of the reasons Kee listed above (especially during hurricanes!). How long are you supposed to breastfeed? I saw one woman on a talk show (a while back) that was still breastfeeding her son at age 3 :-O

Cinny: I know that in Scandinavian countries (Highest IQs by the way) they advocate breastfeeding until 5! I just can't see that happening. Eww. But you can express breast milk and give it to them even after they stop nursing. Makes more sense than giving cow's milk! My breastfed baby had no diaper rash, no colds, and she never got colicy. It made me a believer. :)

Wow, that's great, Rosie! I could keep pumping until it runs out on its own.

Some people never go dry! Remember nursemaids??? They were in their 50s breastfeeding other people children sometimes. It is really beneficial to breastfeed. The connections to your child is amazing too.

I think its good to breastfeed at least until 2 but if you are comfortable and the baby is eating regular foods, than breastfeeding until 3 or 4 years old for 1 or 2 times a day (my clients are usually doing this before bed and first thing in the morning) is safe, plus it gives them the additional protection of your antibodies, plus protection from other kids' germs in school!

I think that if you wean at 1 its okay too. As long as they eat foods by then. Pumping milk and not latching doesn't give the baby a chance to develop their jaw muscles even after they are 6 months to a year, and the suckling reflex that latching allows means they have to wrok harder so their jaws are more defined, they have better speech patterns, and their teeth grow in straighter and healthier...Many bottle-fed babies have that "bootle-mouth" issue, where their teeth look like they don't shut, and not to mention they can be at higher risk for baby bottle tooth decay....Food for thought!
